Village of Thatched Houses

Excellent day trip to Giethoorn, a little north and east of Amsterdam. Giethoorn's name originates from the first inhabitants discovery of hundreds of goat horns (giethoorns) in the marshland which were remnants of a 10th century flood.

Described as the 'Venice of the North' - quiet, serene and remote.  Remote yes, quiet - not so much, especially not on as beautiful a day as I visited. The economy of the village is based almost entirely on tourism so it was not a surprise how busy it was.  I have posted some pictures below of the village, and more can be found in the Giethoorn gallery page.

Giethoorn

Have decided to spend my Sunday in Giethoorn, described by many as the Venice of the North. Giethoorn is a village in the Dutch province of Overijssel.  The village is characterised by its many canals and no raods, the only access to it is on foot over wooden arch bridges.  The villagers use punters or boats to get around. The forecast is for sunny weather so I will hopefully be able to post some good photographs.

I am travelling with Cherry Travel & Tours and there are still places available if you are interested in going (link goes to the Facebook event page).  Photo courtesy of Cherry Heung.

Vormidable - The Hague

Sculptures appearing on Lange Voorhout, in The Hague are part of Vormidable, this years theme during The Hague Sculpture. The outdoor exposition presents the work of 35 up and coming Flemish artists. The exposition celebrates 20 years of cultural cooperation between the Netherlands and Flanders and is part of the BesteBuren ('Dear Neighbours') manifestation, a project with numerous cultural initiatives between the Netherlands and Flanders.  More information can be found at the Hague website.

The outdoor exposition will be open until the 30th of August.
